Just finished reading "god is not great", christopher hitchens. I enjoyed the read but in general I found his tone derogatory. I learned a lot but there are some of his facts that I question. Well worth the read!

Yes, he can come off as a bit arrogant. He is, always has been, on every subject upon which he comments. He likes to provoke. In so doing, he hopes to "provoke" thought. He also edited a book called "The Portable Atheist" in which he has compiled essays on the subject by numerous intellectuals. A great resource, especially when confronted with some theist who starts sprouting off about how Einstein believed in God, or whatever.

I also recommend "The Atheist's Bible" which contains short quotes on the subject from hundreds of well known thinkers.

I don't always agree with Hitchens' viewpoint but he's a brilliant writer. And, really, who cares if he sounds arrogant? I find it kind of funny that so many people feel that atheists should always be humble and modest when they're talking about the most strident and arrogant of groups, religious fundamentalists and an organization with a history of oppression and silencing open thought and speech. I've found that people who get their knickers all in a twist because they find Hitchens or Dawkins "arrogant" or disapprove of the tone of atheist discourse are intellectually cowtowing to a fundamental arrogance of religion - that it should be above criticism and must be "respected".

No doubt. I feel that way about anything that anybody says must be "respected." This includes religions, gender, political thought, whatever. Respect? Pffft. Respect is earned. I take them all seriously. In fact, I don't want your respect, unless I've earned it. You had better take me seriously though.
